Nifty
This is a nifty little gadget. It is NOT A DOPPLER; it does not use any kind of radio waves or anything to pick up sound, as the machinery at the doctor's office does. The instruction manual plainly states that.

With that said, it is quite fun to use. It is a battery operated microphone, basically. It has a hollow "cone" on the bottom which you place against your stomach (think of putting a cup against a wall and trying to listen in on some secret conversation in the next room) and holes for two sets of earphones (included!) for listening. You will have to wait until you are further along to hear things, as it states in the manual, because it IS just an amplifying device.

It does state in the manual numerous times that it is pretty rare to hear the baby's actual heartbeat. . . They have to be in a certain position, and you have to place the monitor in a certain position, etc. but I enjoy just listening to the "thumps" from the baby moving around. You can also...

Nice idea, poor delivery
When I bought this there werent any online reviews but I was really excited to hear my baby. Im two weeks into the third trimester and I still can't pick up anything. Yes you hear some little things, but even in a quiet room your breathing messes up anything you could hear. You basically have to hold your breath and be satisfied with a few wooshing noises. For the price I wouldnt bother buying it again if I was given the chance.
Exactly what we wanted!
So my fiancé and I bought this item not expecting to much (basically figured it was not going to work as we would have liked) but we did anyways. Some of the reasons we bought it was because it said could have two listeners, record the audio sessions, and inexpensive. I was 29wks at time of purchase

Our results were great but initially it was not so. My fiancé instructed me that this was not a Doppler or ultrasound and could not hear and get the results like when we go to docs office. This device amplifies SOUND and to use it requires some finesse. The first time we used it most of what we heard was static (later found that it is our fingers and hands on the machine), this was discouraging but somewhat expected. But a few days later my fiancé was playing with it to listen to his own heart beat and internal sounds when while most of what he was gettting was static he realized that it was only staticy when he put his hand or fingers on it to hold it down...
